Roger Gifkins, renowned Australian boxmaker:

“After many years of producing boxes with hand cut dovetails, I could see the need for a dovetail jig that produced accurate, small scale joints. For my custom boxes I needed a pin spacing (center of one pin to center of the next pin) of less than one inch, preferably around ¾”.

Unable to find anything suitable in woodworking catalogs, I designed my own dovetail jig to suit this small scale work. Although designed for working at a small scale it is possible to handle workpieces up to aproximatly 1m x 310 mm x 22 mm (aprox.3’ x 1’ x 7/8”). 

The experience gained using this jig over the past 9 years has resulted in many refinements. During this time I have made boxes, using the Gifkins Dovetail Jig, which have been presented to: Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, US President George Bush, Australian Chief Justice Sir Gerard Brennan and many other dignitaries.

I have now made this precision jig available to fellow woodworkers. I not only designed this product but I also produce it in my own workshop. Unlike other jigs which use the router by hand, this jig, using a table mounted router, dramatically improves the precision of the finished joint. This jig meets the needs of both professional and hobby woodworkers alike.”

The jig has proved popular at many high schools in Australia as students can obtain accurate results without constant supervision. The jig is not only superbly accurate, but is beautifully made - right down to the dovetailed joints in the sliding stop.
